India’s mental health crisis remains one of the most pressing public health challenges today. Every year, millions of Indians silently battle anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress — often without access to proper care. Despite the severity of the problem, a significant treatment gap persists. According to the National Mental Health Survey of 2015–16, between 70% and 92% of people with mental health disorders in India do not receive the treatment they need, highlighting an urgent need for innovative solutions.
Globally, mental health conditions affect one in every eight people, and tragically, one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds around the world. In India, nearly 15% of adults require mental health interventions, but many do not seek help due to stigma, lack of access, and high costs. These statistics reflect not only a health crisis but also an opportunity for change driven by new technologies.
A New Approach to Mental Health Care
Traditional mental health services rarely reach everyone who needs them, especially in rural and underserved communities. Experts argue that what is needed is a personalized, tech-enabled approach that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with human compassion. The goal is to create a system that can detect mental health issues early, offer tailored suggestions for intervention, and connect individuals to professionals when necessary.
Such solutions could transform mental health care from reactive to proactive, helping people before their problems escalate. Using AI to screen and recommend care, while ensuring expert human oversight, could make mental health support scalable, affordable, and less intimidating.
The Birth of Brainsscape HealthTech
Leading this innovative movement is Brainsscape HealthTech Pvt. Ltd., a startup based in Odisha, India. Founded by women and driven by a mission to democratize mental health care, Brainsscape aims to build a platform that supports individuals through technology that is both scientific and compassionate.
Their vision is to develop a human-intervention AI platform that can swiftly screen for mental health concerns in just a few minutes. Based on the results, the system can suggest personalized therapy options or alert trained mental health professionals if someone needs human support. This approach intends to reach a wide array of settings — workplaces, schools, hospitals, and community centers — helping normalize conversations about mental health.

The Woman Behind the Movement
At the heart of Brainsscape’s mission is Dr. Silka Shubhadarshini Biswal, a public health professional with extensive experience working across India and internationally. Her journey from the Swami Vivekanand National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTAR) to the University of Hyderabad inspired her to address gaps in mental health services.
Having worked in tribal and rural districts with limited resources, Dr. Biswal understands the importance of culturally sensitive, scalable solutions. She emphasizes that technology is not a replacement for human connection, but a powerful tool to extend care to those who need it most. “Brainsscape is more than a startup; it’s a commitment. Our goal is to ensure no one feels alone or unsupported in their mental health journey,” she says.
Impact Goals and Future Plans
Brainsscape’s team has set ambitious goals: to impact one million lives by 2030, to normalize mental health conversations in workplaces, schools, and families, and to create solutions aligned with national and international standards, including those of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and global digital health frameworks.
Starting from Odisha, the startup aims to expand its reach across India and eventually go global, bringing accessible mental health care to communities that need it most.
A Movement for Change
The emergence of Brainsscape signals a broader shift in India’s mental health landscape, where technology and human compassion merge to fill glaring gaps. As mental health awareness grows and stigma gradually diminishes, platforms like Brainsscape could become vital tools in transforming how India cares for its citizens’ emotional and psychological well-being.
In an era where mental health challenges are mounting, innovative startups like Brainsscape are not just technological projects — they are movements that promise a future where mental health support is personal, accessible, and compassionate for all.
